How to produce a STP - Monitoring

A Travel Plan is a living and changing document – it is not a one off paper exercise. In order to retain your status as an approved STP status you must revisit your plan at least annually, and preferably termly, to monitor your progress and put forward new actions etc.

The borough, and TfL, need to know how your schemes are impacting on modal shift in order to decide what works and what doesn’t. Completing the ‘mode of travel to school’ question in the DfES school census each January is essential – lots of assistance is available for you in doing this from the School Travel Advisor.

For a more representative picture of how successful your STP is, completing a quick ‘hands up’ travel survey termly (see our survey section above for more information) can be a valuable tool and also reduce the impact of seasonal variation on your data.

In addition, we strongly recommend that you keep an ‘evidence portfolio’ which holds all of the documentation, leaflets, press cuttings, pictures and survey feedback that you do in relation to your Travel Plan. This makes it easy for you to monitor your progress and update your plan, as well as aiding the STA in feeding back progress to TfL.

You are required to formally review your plan at least annually with the STA – visit our hub for an example of a reviewed plan:

Additional funds for improvements or projects related to travel will be reliant on you to keep your Travel Plan up to date. If you cannot show that you have monitored and updated your plan at least annually it will affect our ability to bid for money from TfL for any future projects or engineering improvements that you may want.
