How to produce a STP - Consultation

After you have surveyed your pupils and parents it will be possible to combine your own local knowledge with the data from the survey and start arriving at some recommendations.

At this point it will be a good idea to hold a wider consultation with all the stakeholders to discuss your findings and look at any proposals you may have. This may take the form of an extended Steering Group meeting, additional local resident questionnaires or even a whole school open public meeting.

  • If, for example, you have discovered that pupils would like to cycle to school but their parents are worried about safety on the route, you could approach a traffic engineer to discuss the potential for installing cycle lanes. You may also want to discuss the feasibility of additional pedestrian crossings or road calming schemes.
  • If you have problems with behaviour on buses or the timetable of a route, it maybe possible to contact a representative from the company to speak to the Steering Group about possible solutions.
  • Whatever your plans, support from the local area committee in the form of your local councillor is incredibly useful.

This wider consultation will focus your Travel Plan on what is realistically achievable, as well as ensuring that you have all of the stakeholders on side before submission.
