School Travel Plans are one answer to the problems of excessive car use in travel to and from schools. They look at ways we can make the surroundings of the school more friendly and safe for cyclists and pedestrians, and also schemes that can be set up by the school to promote walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing.
Undoubtedly it will not be possible for every pupil and parent to walk, cycle, car share or take public transport to school, but there are many journeys where these modes of transport offer a real alternative. If the school community, local residents and the council work together to bring about these changes – all will reap the benefits.
